Create "Name" Field Separate from "User"

Postby myaeger » 02.11.2010, 16:12

The problem is that if you edit your user profile and change the field marked "User," you have to login using the new name and not the ID which was originally created. However, if you use a login ID instead, there is no place to put the user's name. If the user changes the "User" field to their name, they cannot login (unless they know to use their name instead of their user ID).

This is a simple fix (add one table column) and is a MUST to keep this software an option.

BTW, I've noticed the same issue with this forum. Their is no "Name" field, only a "Username."

Long standing, half implemented (check the outcommented HTML in edituserform.tpl) , will be there...someday.

I resolved this issue by not letting my users change their name. I just made the User input field on the Edit User Form readonly:
Version: 7.0
file: edituserform.tpl
line: 53
"<td class="right"><input type = "text" class="text" value = "{$user.name}" name = "name" id="name" required="1" realname="{#name#}" tabindex="1" readonly="readonly"/></td>"

How about this, remove completely the function to let users login using usernames, as there is already ability to login using email. Rename the username field, from User, to Name or Full Name. Change the login page, to state that the user needs to use their email. And problem solved.
