Collapse All Panels by default

Is there a way to collapse all panels by default? They are all open when you log in and usually get in the way while increasing the page length.

Is this still the case? For my purposes it would be best to have a way to have the default setting to be that the Desktop items are all collapsed. Or if this is not possible, is there somewhere I can change the default page after logging in? for instace, I'd rather have the projects page be the first thing people see rather than the Desktop.

None of these options is available in the Collabtive user interface.

I would be attempting to make these modifications by changing the index.tpl file. I have figured out a way to remove these items altogether, but have had no luck in setting them to show as collapsed by default.
